Mantel Designs - Which Materials Are Better?
One of the more difficult decisions to make with fireplace
mantel designs is whether to go with a wood, stone or metal
design. All three have their strengths and weaknesses. Here’s a
closer look at each one.
Wood Fireplace Mantel
Designs
Wood is by far the most typical mantel design for the home.
It’s traditional, lower cost (in most cases), and is easy to
install.
You can by mantel kits that will assist you in doing the job
yourself or you can hire it done. It’s also easy to add
fireplace mantelshelves and surrounds at the same time.
Wood fireplace mantels are made from all types of wood, some
of which can be pricey. But for the quality, warmth and appeal
they give any room, a wood mantel is hard to beat.
Stone Fireplace Mantel
Designs
For a classy, elegant look, a stone fireplace mantel is
where it’s at. Whether it is natural stone, marble, granite,
slate or any other type of stone, those mantels will last for
generations.
On the flipside, stone mantels can be very expensive
depending on the type of material you choose. They are also
very heavy and need to be installed by a professional. Although
beautiful, stone fireplace mantels are for those with a large
budget.
Metal Fireplace Mantel
Designs
A metal fireplace mantel is rare, but done properly and in
the right décor, can be beautiful. Mantels accented with copper
or bronze adds a distinct look and feel to the room.
The major drawback with this type of fireplace mantel design
is heat. Because it is metal, and due to the extreme heat of
the fireplace, they will get very hot if not insulated
properly.
As you can see, all of these fireplace mantel designs have
their own unique characteristics. It really comes down to your
own personal tastes and budget.
